A Study of Postlaparotomy Fever

Abstract
A prospective study was performed on the 50 patients, who showed fever elevation(¡Ã38¡É) during their postoperative course, among 801 patients who underwent intraabdominal operation at the Department of Surgery, Wonkwang University Hospital from
August,
1989 to september, 1990.
The aim of this study was to define the causes of postlaparotomy fever and relations between the causes of fever and postoperative days.
@ES The results were as follows ;
@EN 1) The fever incidence of all patients was 6.2%, and that of male and female were 8.5% and 3.2%, respectively.
2) The most common cause of fever was pulmonary complication(32.0%), and then wound in fection, salmonellosis, thrombophlebitis, unknown etiology and intraabdominal abscess in descending order.
3) The common causes according to postoperative days were as follows; between the 1st and the 3rd day: pumonary complications(13/18), between the 4th and the 6th day: wound infection (10/18), and there was no relation between other causes and
postoperative days.
4) The aged patient group(>60) showed higher fever incidence(17.0%) than the younger group(5.6%).
5) The operations more than 3 hours(16.1%) showed higher fever incidence than those less than 3 hours(5.3%).
6) The fever incidence of emergency operations(6.7%) was higher than that of elective, operations(4.9%).
7) The fever incidences after clean, clean-contaminated, contaminated operations were 0%, 2.0%, 15.6%; respectively. So the more the degree of contamination, the higher the fever incidence.
